Scaleshell Photo

Scaleshell (Leptodea leptodon) is a federally endangered species that uses freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens) as host.  Drum routinely eat snails and mussels.  We know very little about how mussels that use drum as host balance the need to reproduce with the risk of being eaten. The peculiar ruffled edge on the shell is a distinctive feature of female scaleshell whose function is unexplained.
