Conglutinates of Ouachita kidneyshell Photo

Conglutinates of Ouachita kidneyshell, (Ptychobranchus occidentalis). These elaborate structures are sacs of glochidia that are shaped and marked to resemble insects or larval fish that would be eaten by the host (darters).  When a fish bites the conglutinate it ruptures, releasing the glochidia, which attach to the gills of the fish.
