A female brokenrays mussel (Lampsilis reeveiana) displays
the mantle flap lures, which appear similar to a small fish. The flaps
are inflatable and are retracted when the mussel is not carrying larvae. The
marsupial gills, full of larvae, are visible between the two sides of the
lure. When a predatory fish strikes at the lure, the marsupial
gills rupture to release the glochidia. Hosts of brokenrays include
black bass (Micropterus) and rock bass (Ambloplites).
